Day 6 overview

And so day six has come and gone. After another 95 miles with 2500m climbing and 2 epic descents, the boys head to their hotel in Tirano through the amazing Alpine scenery.

Steve had a disturbed night’s sleep, being woken twice in the night by Paul’s feet on his face. The boys weren’t exactly looking forward to the climb into the Dolomites (Alps), as it had some nasty hills.

The sun bore down on them, and with little shade for shelter they spent the majority of the day in direct sun, topping 35 degrees today. A passing water-trough provided a much needed ‘dunking’ opportunity for heads and hats.

Stu is coping valiantly with the enormous blisters on the bottoms of his feet (that’s definitely worth some extra donations to the just-giving sites!!) and George’s lungs are still working thanks to the magic brown inhaler. The boys are taking on masses of fluid to cope with the heat – around 40 litres a day of specialist drinks plus water and cans of drink at each stop.

Kyle is indispensable, and is always on hand to provide much needed food and water. He would like to formally thank the boys for the thoughtful birthday present that they put a lot of time and effort into choosing for his birthday yesterday, that he is proudly sporting in the team photo.

Half way up one ascent Paul’s legs gave way on a restart and he managed to fall onto Steve who somehow managed to keep both of them plus the bikes upright. Quite a feat of gymnastics on the part of Steve. Stu, Jamie and Steve got up to speeds of 35mph on some of the downhill sections, creating a much needed opportunity to cool down. This was particularly welcome after the 10 mile 6% gradient hill that they’d just encountered. .

On arrival at their hotel tonight Steve summed up how they all felt at achieving Day 6 successfully: we are all a sweaty mess.

Roll on Day 7 – the day that will make ‘day 3’ seem like a walk in the park.
